Perilla (Kkae) is the most prominent crop in Cha’s garden. After receiving perilla seeds from Cha—the first seeds she ever shared—Bahc set out to find Koreans in the Netherlands who were also cultivating this plant, seeking advice on how to germinate and nurture them in a new environment.

Through interviews and shared meals, Bahc discovered that perilla is more than just a staple of Korean culinary culture. In a foreign land, this crop serves as a nostalgic medium that evokes a deep sense of home.

Like A Seed documents the diverse motivations and unique expertise of Korean migrants growing perilla in the Netherlands. Using the seed as a central metaphor, the book retraces the intricate processes of migration and adaptation.
